SOCIAL MEDIA HABIT OR NEED

SOCIAL MEDIA AMPLIFIES HUMAN INTENTS BOTH POSITIVELY AND NEGATIVELY

" The great thing about social media was how it gave a voice to voiceless people."
- Jon Ronson

Social Media is now become the part of human life not only in India but mostly in all countries of the world.Social media has often been described as the silent revolution of 21st century.

The habit to use social media late night is common in today life style but late night sleeping weaken our immune system. It not only affects our visual organ but our brain and health also.

If one's immunity compromised then they will become vulnerable to even a small disease and their body face difficulty to cope up with this problem.

EARLY TO BED & EARLY TO RISE,

MAKES A MAN HEALTHY, WEALTHY & WISE.

Earlier this poem not only taught by teachers but they make sure that their students follow that in real life, in implementing this the main role were played by parents but today when parents and teachers themselves not following the rule of healthy life how can they force their kids to follow that.

Interestingly, Social media is not only changing how people communicate but also what people communicate.

It  silently become the habit  or can say bad habit of human being, as now social media is operating humans rather than human operating it.

Not only kids and youth but the elders also lost in that virtual world and their mind slightly started believing that the virtual characters of any series or movies are real, they unintentionally in uninformed manner start inspired from that character which they like the most in their very favourite serial.

To be happy is everyone's fundamental rights but closing our eyes from reality and living without understanding the situations faced by vulnerable people of our earth is their indirect exploitation by ourself who don't even realise that they exist.

As a responsible and sensitive human being it's our duty to use social media to take the dark reality of what is going around us and decide our life style accordingly, so that we indirectly can help them.

When we talk about social media cellphones and internet automatically come in the picture as all these are attatched to each other.

After 4G internet come , its speeds attract people towards itself and number of users drastically increased in 3-4 years.

India, ranking second in terms of user numbers after China, India reached 755 million social media users in 2022, and is estimated to reach 1.17 billion by 2027. Overall, the United States has the third largest social network audience, followed by Indonesia and Brazil.

In this digital education eranow even kids also used you tube and many other social media platform frequently as their normal routine. Parents ignores the side effects of its use and only considering that it is useful for todays life.

When we read books the percentage of our brain actively take part is more than that when we use social media platform for any purpose it also make you tired earlier than book reading.

Before the time of 4G internet speed was slow and people used mobile in limited manner but now when internet speed faster its slows down humans speed and force them to stick to their cell phones and engaged on any one of social media platform.

Begining Popularity of Social Media-

Year 2008 saw the election of Barack Obama as the first black president of UAS. However, this rise was accomplished by the silent rise of social media-Twitter, Facebook- which played a major role in influencing people. A similar story in 2014 for another leader Narendra Modi for India.

During 2010, there were widespread discontent against autocratic regimes across Middle-East often referred to as Arab Spring. Social media played a huge role in mobilising people who were demanding democracy and voice in decision making.

#Me Too campaign on Social media against sexual harassment and assault, became a global movement and helped in demonstrating the widespread prevalence of sexual harassment and assault especially in work place.

The war for Net Neutrality in India was not fought on any ground, water or space but on Social media. The support on social media finally led to government confirming net neutrality.

Negative impacts of social media-

I will bring light on health first as "Health is Wealth" & even a billionaire can't become healthy if ignored its importance in life for a long time.

Health & Mental-

The radiation which come out from your electronic gadgets are slowly harming you. Not now but after a decade government will start campaign that put the electronic devices apart from your children and also switch off while sleeping but till that time our generation become addicted of these radiation like a chain smoker feel madness if not to smoke, quite similar feelings will generate, that whats called today social media addiction.

Continuous comparing our lives with others has been found to be mentally unhealthy, studies have found that social media usage triggers more sadness & less well-being. Also social media making it tough for people to engage in prolonged concentration.

Live streaming of suicides by teens has emerged on social media. Carpel Tunnel Syndrome affecting hand & wrists because of too much typing and holding mobile. It making people lazy & immobile away from exercise.

Environmental-

Its very simple to understand with an example of circus, magic shows and zoo.

Earlier it was common to go on those places during vacation but now slowly with time its importance decreased and people prefer to go shopping mall, restuarent and vacation goes in exhibition of latest collections.Result is that now circus, zoo and magic shows are about to disappear.

Similarly if we will not used parks and greenary it will also lost with time and social media bound us with the mobile phones and if our childeren will not feel the atmosphere of green park and will not enjoy outdoor games they will never feel bad on its removal which undoubtedly harmful in long run.

Tell your kids not to play outdoor games like cricket, badminton virtually on mobile phones but to play it in real field to save their interest towards environment.

Educational-

Its very simple if you will be healthy you can concentrate more on education. While studying on computer or mobile phones the potential to study and memorise decreases.

Everyone have listen that "YOGI" search peaceful natural environment for their "SAADHNA", a very known example of GAUTAM BUDDHA who get SALVATION under the BODHI TREE, point is here "TREE".

Why the campus of all old university is surrounded by so many green trees and even to get affiliation for college campus field is a mandatory factor.

Reason to tell all these example is that green environment means plenty of oxygen which inhaled by us and make our brain and body to concentrate enough and maintain focus long-lasting.

Social-
Commodification of public life where every aspect of life is being open for public consumption. The line between private & public is no more clear.

Problem of Cyber crimes, cyber bullying, cyber abuse, trolls where people have been subjected to incessant abuse. For e.g. Foreign Affair Minister Sushma Swaraj being subjected to abuse.

Positive impacts of social media-

On Democracy-

Social media is latest leg of forth pillar of democracy i.e Media. Now if any law is of violative nature social media plays important role in draw down the shortcoming in law and consequences of its implementation.

Recents examples of 3 Farm Laws, Ayodhya Judgement, CAA, NRC and many more laws become the burning topics on social media platform.

Social media give the citizen free hand to use their fundamental right freedom of speech to express their views on any matter either political or religious.

Cultural-

Many influencers makes differents videos on information of our diversity from north valley of kasmir to keral in south through which without travell everyone can know about Indian cultural beauty.

Many art forms and temples architecture now can be seen on you tube videos. This also helps educating the youth about our culture.

Social-

India witness some of the watershed events like; Anti-Corruption Movements, Muzzafarnagar riots, Nirbhaya case which even create legislation on related matters.

Helped in making people more tolerant, aware about other's beliefs, culture etc. Broadening of mental horizon to give many campaign like #BlackLiveMatter, #WorldEnvironmentDay, #EarthDay etc.

Many student protest used social media actively for sharing information to their groups regarding the action.

Social media helped in creating awareness about LGBTQ community and give that community atleast some relief by legislation.

On world level Arab spring that led to the democratisation of many Arabian countries was not possible without the power of social media.

Recents riots in Europe or the uprising of Taiwan or Sri lanka social media plays a vital role in it.

Economical-

Social media proved as a cheaper way for many purpose either for connecting their close one sitting abroad or in marketing in field of goods or education everything is cheaper now.

It has given new source of employment as every organisation has a separate social media department for feedback of companies.

e-Commerce; Startups; Patanjali Ayurveda limited has made huge impact through social media; Dettol's Global Handwashing Day campaign etc.

Educational-

If one use social media wisely it can helps alot for education field as now all the information is available now on just a single click but it is choice of user that either use it for gaining useful knowledge or can use it to fill our brain with shit of social media.

Political-

Now social media is increasingly adopted by politician, political activists and help them to express their views and can understand the reactions of their citizens easily.

It became easy for politicians to get the problems of public from social media and can positively work on that to remove that from society as a responsible elected person.

Environmental-

With the help of social media one can easily aware of climate change and became a responsible person to further spread this knowledge to safe our one and only home earth and its atmosphere before it suffocate us.

Social media enabled people to become more consciously aware about environmental protection. It has propelled the rise of the independent activism. For e.g.During Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Gulf Coast residents used Facebook & Twitter as platforms.

It is also being used during campaign of Greenpeace targeted Shell Oil Operations in the Arctic Circle using social media; rise of European Green party to a large part in attributed to social media activism.

#WorldEnvironmentDay and #EarthDay became global trendsetters & helped in rising awareness about environment.

Mobilisation for protest against Sterlite Plant in Tamil Nadu were led by social media.

Ethics & Social media-

Social media has become a means for free speech & expression guaranteed under Article 19 of India Constitution.

UN had made Internet access a human right, recently Supreme Court declared Right to Internet Access as a fundamental right of every Indian.

Technical Information-

Social media are interactive digital channels that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, interests, and other forms of expression through virtual communities and networks.

Social media are interactive Web 2.0 internet based applications but became more famous after 4G mobile come in picture.

User generated content—such as text posts or comments, photos, videos and data generated through all online interactions—is the lifeblood of social media.

Users create service-specific profiles for the website or app that are designed and maintained by the social media organisation.

Social media helps the development of online social networks by connecting a user's profile with those of other individuals or groups.

Features of social media-

Fastest communication as on single message number of people connected get the information.

Cheapest form of sharing information and interacting with their close one sitting on the other end of the world.

Less time consuming as on few second information can spread globally.

Global in nature which connect the people from all over the world. As Mark Zuckerberg said," Connectivity is a human right".

Easier in use as now people from rural area also became aware of what is happening all around the world.

No doubt that social media connects you and shares your views but with this you are slowly becoming slave of social media without even getting any information regarding it.

As the most intelligent species on the earth you should use social networking sites smartly as it has both positive and negative impacts on yourself.

Social media-Challenges to-

Access-
Digital penetration in India still continues to skewed against rural areas, women, lower class etc. In addition, there is serious lack of digital literacy and social media application in Vernacular language.

Internal security-
Social media has also enabled radical and terrorist groups to promote radicalisation, recruite people and distribute their literature, Issue of Lone-Wolf attacks radicalised by these literature. ISIS has successfully used social media.

Law Enforcement Agencies-
Law enforcement is another challenge on social media because of the speed at which information spread, problems of identifying perpetrators of crimes and lack of co-operation from social media websites like; Facebook, Youtube, watsapp etc.

Problem of Fake News and Propaganda-
Such as rumours of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee's death, reputation damage, monetary losses, brand image crisis and many more fake news which many time become problem for government to handle.

Regulation issue of social media-
There is no explicit provision in India regulating Social Media. However, there are series of laws which do regulate content on social media.

Information Technology Act, 2000 -Section 79 of the act mandates that if there is some objectionable material on a site then there is ought to be action within 36 hours of the offence being pointed out.

Indian Penal Code(IPC) - Section 153A promoting enmity between groups on gound of religion, race etc. Section 499 Defamation, Section 509 insulting modesty of a woman, section 506 criminal intimidation, Section 124A Sedition etc can be invoked against content on social media.

Conclusion-
Social media emerged as double edge sword. While it has transformed the way of what people think, believe and act also it has led to violate privacy.

As Victor Hugo said," No power on earth can stop an idea whose time has come". Today, this power is "social media".

But according to me there is a power which can change everything that is our ETERNAL POWER. If on decide to not to follow the path which will definitely harm in future can change any habit.

"Superfluous of anything is harmful similar case apply with social media. Learn to Control everything present around you rather than being the puppet of those things"
